'Gospel Plus' has morphed from 'The Southland Gospel Singers' which first met in February 2023. A simpler name; and also reflects the fact that we don't only sing Gospel songs. Now, at the beginning of 2024, our second year, we have 29 regular singers; with around 20 making it to rehearsal nights each week.
We had a very exciting first year, with six different performances, large and small, and we have developed into a really fun and happy group of people. We laugh a lot amongst the songs we sing. We don't aim for perfection; we aim to have fun and be 'just good enough'!
Our Vision is ...
To have fun and experience the power of singing harmony in a group.
To sing in the community, sharing this uplifting experience with others.
To welcome newcomers.
Why We Sing
We sing because it makes us feel good and adds so much more fun to our lives. We don't adhere to any religion, although we sing mainly gospel songs. This genre began to spread out from the Southern states of America in the early 1920s, from the enslaved people. Jazz and Blues also developed out of this era. They are songs of joy, courage and hope for freedom. If not in the present, then certainly after a return to our 'Heavenly Home'.
The songs are easy to learn with simple lyrics, simple melodies and many repeats. We learn by listening and copying. Also known as 'Call and Response'. They are fun to sing, and singing with a big group in four-part harmony is very powerful. You don't need any special skills; you just need to be able to sing in tune!
